Eastern Michigan University

Ypsilanti, MI

After a sudden turnover in leadership, Eastern Michigan University (EMU) needed to find an interim facilities director to step in immediately to run daily operations, which included construction of a $100 million project, and to develop a long-term strategy for the Department of Physical Plant.

Plante Moran CRESA provided a senior member of the project management team to provide the guidance and leadership EMU needed.  During the six-month transition, operational improvements were implemented and an enhanced working environment was developed within the Physical Plant Department, which had been weakened during the leadership turnover.

Challenges

  • EMU needed leadership to run the facilities
  • Morale and trust within the 200 unionized employees in Physical Plant had weakened during transition
  • Need to improve efficiency of operations in their Physical Plant, establishing priorities and budgets

Solutions

Plante Moran CRESA provided EMU with an Interim Associate Vice President for Facilities for six months, who managed the unionized employees, redeveloping trust and provided direction to the team.  PMC worked with EMU to establish policies and procedures for construction management and provided project management leadership for a $100 million science complex.  A long-term operational plan was developed, priorities were set and a capital budget created for the 2008 fiscal year.
