Detroit Service Learning Academy is renovating and expanding it’s 75,000-square-foot K-8 Charter School in Detroit Michigan. The $3 million program includes:
- Complete 75,000-square-foot building renovation
- The purchase and renovation of a 33,000-square-foot office building
Challenges
Detroit Service Learning Academy (DSL) wanted to expand and renovate it’s 75,000-square-foot campus. They had a very limited budget and needed to determine how to divide the project into phases and best utilize their space while maximizing the funds available.
Solutions
Plante Moran CRESA(PMC) was engaged by Detroit Service Learning Academy to act as owner’s representative and facilitate project management, real estate acquisition, facility planning, architect and contractor selection, phased construction and move management services. PMC worked diligently with the staff, General Contractor, Beal Inc., and Architect, French Associates, to keep the project on budget and in-line with DSL’s multi-phase goals.
In a $1.2 million phase I, over a period of the next 16 months, PMC will assist DSL in converting a 33,000-square-foot former YMCA building into classroom and gymnasium space to help meet the needs of a growing charter school clientele.
In phase II, PMC plans to assist DSL in the renovation of their 75,000-square foot existing school building.
