SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – August 20, 2012 – Plante Moran Cresa, a fully integrated independent real estate transaction and consulting firm, announces the completion of a major milestone of the Van Buren Public Schools (VBPS) project in Belleville, Michigan. VBPS received the “keys” to the newly expanded and renovated Belleville High School in July and a dedication ceremony and open house were held on Friday, August 18th. Staff have already begun the move-in process in preparation for the start of the 2012-2013 school year. Demolition of the old high school, expansion of some common areas and installation of the new parking lot and detention pond are in process and slated for completion by November 2012.
VBPS engaged Plante Moran Cresa to organize and execute experienced bond planning and program management services after the District failed to secure funding through previous bond elections. Plante Moran Cresa reconceived the bond proposal in 2008, working to understand and integrate the needs of the community and the school board. The bond then passed, resulting in an award of $79 million for capital investments in the District. Plante Moran Cresa’s ability to assist the District in obtaining federal funding for the project saved the District an estimated $12 million in interest payments alone.
The engagement, which encompassed 366,000 square feet and 39 acres, included a student demographic analysis, project management, involvement with the design process of the expanded and renovated high school, move management, building commissioning and close-out services.
“The new Belleville High School required multiple skills for completion,” said Paul Wills, AIA, LEED AP, a partner in Plante Moran Cresa’s construction practice and an education team leader. “We were able to work with the District’s educational goals and objectives and assist the architect to right-size the high school in the new plan and reduce overall square footage by 20,000 square feet. The $4million saved in the reduced space was used to invest in better building materials and technology upgrades that will result in long-term savings for the district on operational costs and upkeep.”
Additionally, Plante Moran Cresa reviewed the original construction schedule and indentified phasing considerations that reduced the construction time frame from an anticipated 48 months to 36 months, saving the district $1million and putting the students into the new high school one year ahead of schedule. Van Buren School District Board of Education President Martha Toth reported the District’s satisfaction with the work performed by Plante Moran Cresa.
“We learned from our last building project that we needed a level of both expertise and stable supervision that we could not guarantee in-house. Plante Moran Cresa’s services have been a godsend and well worth the cost,” said Toth.
